Somerset panel OKs demolition review, ramp redesign

Other Committee · Meeting of May 7, 2026

Somerset Historical Commission clears a demolition review and sets design terms for an accessibility ramp fix. Member Paul Healy found no historical significance in a Riverside-area home dating to the late 1940s after searching records back nearly 200 years, and the board voted unanimously to allow the demolition review to proceed. Building Commissioner James Aguiar told the board the Old Town Hall's wheelchair ramp "does not meet code requirements" and is too narrow, prompting members to ask for a redesign with a wooden-and-glass door and ornamental railing that keeps the ramp in its current side-building location.

Member Jim Cronahan pushed to broaden the town's aging Historic Building Marker Program mailing beyond a short list of old homes, with roughly $260 left in the program's budget before it lapses July 1. The commission also flagged concern that a rejected Main Street rezoning recommendation moved through the Planning Board without historical review of nearby wharfs.
