Water Board Directs Single-Phase Plant Upgrade
Water · Meeting of May 6, 2026
Somerset water board backs single-phase plant upgrade over a projected $8.4 million savings. Commissioners directed engineering firm Wright-Pierce to redesign the wastewater treatment plant overhaul as one construction phase rather than two, citing an estimated $76.3 million cost versus $84.7 million and a 2030 completion date roughly three years earlier than the phased option. The board also approved sewer abatements of $1,139.05 for Jacqueline Cosgrove on Church Street and $298.77 for Elizabeth Mosden on Lafayette Street, tabled a third abatement tied to the estate of Bernard Flynn, and awarded a temporary sludge-disposal contract to Bay State Stewards Disposal of Lakeville.
A resident, Elizabeth Haskowski, pressed the board during public comment over why a $3.5 million warrant article was never explained to selectmen: "Are you ever going to explain it to them before the meeting?" FY27 water and sewer budgets remain on hold pending final insurance figures.
