Recreation Board Approves Field Hockey Clinic, DC Dunk
Other Committee · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Somerset recreation board ranks a $176,000 splash pad over basketball courts for CPA funding. The Recreation Commission unanimously approved a free October 25 field hockey clinic for grades K-5 and a fourth annual "DC Dunk" fundraiser at Pierce Beach for January 9, which helps offset the $1,200-to-$1,500 eighth-grade Washington, D.C. trip. Recreation Director Fonte told the board the Pierce Beach splash pad, priced at $176,000, has "been bumped five times" in capital planning over roughly eight years, and urged ranking it above a $200,000-plus Pottersville basketball court rebuild, saying bluntly of the courts, "this is not the NBA." The board agreed to push a roughly $250,000 restroom overhaul to fiscal 2029 and crack-fill the basketball courts one more year.
A separate playground resurfacing project came in at $8,300, under the $10,000 bid threshold. Submissions are due to the Community Preservation Act Commission October 14, with funding decided November 9.
