Economic Panel Votes to Enlist Town Planner

Other Committee · Meeting of August 4, 2026

Somerset's Economic Development Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to have the town planner detail why local permitting drags on for months. Chairman Paul Coglia and member Todd Costa pushed the panel to let Town Planner Amy, rather than the committee itself, define which best practices fit Somerset, after Costa argued, "She is the professional in the room, right?" Members cited a roughly $12,000 traffic study that drove one business to relocate to Fall River, a car dealer who endured nearly four months of meetings before selling his lot, and a reopened shop hit with about $1,000 in transfer fees. A member identified only as Selectman Bob argued the town needs written permitting policy: "a pathway that can be followed." The panel also weighed a $300 Keep Massachusetts Beautiful dues invoice and heard its spring cleanup drew 150 volunteers and filled more than 200 bags of trash.
