Somerset School Committee ruled out closing South Elementary School for the 2027-2028 year after a lengthy debate over consolidating the town's three elementary schools into two. Member Victor Machado argued the district should redirect savings from closing a school, roughly $300,000 annually, toward retrofitting North Elementary's open classrooms with walls, a project he estimated at $15 million to $20 million. Superintendent Jeffrey Schoonover said districtwide K-5 enrollment has fallen nearly 25 percent since 2014, from 1,126 to a projected 891 students, with South's enrollment down 21 percent, from 294 to 231.
The chair said, "We have no plan. We have no information. We have no guarantee for funding for walls," and the committee agreed to retitle the topic "future consolidation plans for elementary schools" for its September 8 meeting.
Nine residents spoke, including teacher Karen Faria, who recalled packing her Wilbur classroom "with buckets in our room" after that school's 2014-era closure.
