School Committee · Meeting of October 13, 2026
Somerset School Committee approved a Nov. 2 bus route overhaul cutting the district's fleet from 15 to 12 buses. Superintendent Jeffrey Schoonover said one North Elementary route already averages 51 to 58 riders a day, while other buses carry as few as 20, and said families would be notified before the change takes effect. The committee also voted unanimously to let the Middle School Building Committee spend existing building-project funds on a TV studio and post-production suite, to pay $679.90 for new meeting-room microphones after an open meeting law complaint, and to prepay $344,945 in special education tuition under Chapter 71D, Chief Financial Officer Kayla Marsden said.
Members also backed a Massachusetts Association of School Committees resolution letting regional school committees access special education reserve funds by majority vote, though one member noted "I can support the bill for... those large western Mass schools that need the money."
