Committee approves 2026-27 student handbook
School Committee · Meeting of August 18, 2026
Somerset-Berkeley panel adopts new student handbook, pauses Music Town Festival parade. The School Committee unanimously approved the 2026-2027 handbook, ending assigned parking passes for first-come lots, adding a tiered tardiness system, and clarifying search-and-seizure rules after administrators said refusing a search "basically" implies "some type of guilt." Somerset Friends of Music president Colleen Hart said seven newly elected board members decided to pause this year's parade, keeping the Festival Ball, Concert Night and Music Family Day. STA president Terry Turigny pressed the board to reverse a June 30 vote she said leaves survivors of 9-12 staff paying full health-premium costs versus 25 percent for pre-K-8 survivors, asking "what is the human cost of your decision?" The board also tabled its June 23 and June 30 minutes over accuracy disputes and reappointed Dr.
CC Resnick as school physician.
