SOMERSET — The Somerset Zoning Board of Appeals continued a hearing on a 168-megawatt battery storage project to May 7 and agreed to extend its review deadline to July 31. Flatiron Energy representatives, including project manager Hannah Larkin and VP of Development Erin Baker, told the board the Saltcod storage project at 1606 Riverside Avenue has been consolidated onto a single six-acre parcel, deferring work on the former Montauk power plant site to a later phase. The project, part of the state's 10-gigawatt-by-2035 storage goal, would bring an estimated $14 million in local earnings and 110 construction jobs.

VP of Engineering Brian Grummel called the finished facility "very low impact," while ESRG consultant Adam Jakabowski said "we don't want a potential incident someday to be the first time the firefighters have seen the equipment." The board questioned whether the project qualifies as an "electric generating" use and plans to hire its own technical reviewer before voting.
