Zoning Board · Meeting of October 15, 2026

Somerset's Zoning Board of Appeals continued its hearing on a proposed battery energy storage system at 1606 Riverside Avenue to October 29. Chair Steven Cadorette, Vice Chair Bernard Miranda and Clerk Steven Moniz voted 3-0 to extend the case after nearly three hours of testimony from Flatiron Energy's consultants on fire safety and toxic-gas modeling. Hazard Dynamics engineer Kevin Marr said an updated plume study found it "very unlikely that nearby homes or industrial buildings" would see toxic hydrogen fluoride or carbon monoxide levels in a worst-case battery fire, with exposure confined to within roughly 7.5 to 90 feet of the units.

ESRG's Adam Jacobowski said a company subject-matter expert would need roughly three hours to reach the site in an emergency. Miranda, citing the board's three-member voting quorum, pushed Flatiron's Hannah Larkin to extend the statutory decision deadline to November 30 as a buffer; she agreed, saying "Bernie convinced me."
