Somerset EDC Tables Vote On Slade's Ferry Rezoning
Other Committee · Meeting of July 7, 2026
Somerset's Economic Development Committee tabled a vote on rezoning the Slade's Ferry area, delaying action on a draft that would raise allowed density from eight to as much as 17.5 units per acre. Committee member Paul Cogner said the area has drawn no development interest in 13 years, and cited developer Mark Landry's 140-unit complex as proof new housing adds minimal school and police burden, netting just two students and zero police calls. Members also closed out the town's 250th anniversary celebration roughly $9,000 under budget and approved a $2,200 payment to videographer Sean Mills.
Rick Pierce reported Somerset is pursuing a Massachusetts Office on Disability grant worth up to $250,000 for accessibility upgrades, while warning the library's $30,000 digital navigator program loses its state grant at year's end. "We don't have any, it doesn't feel like we have a community event anymore," said committee member Isabella Rocha, questioning the loss of the former Spirit of Somerset festival.
