Recreation board reveals complaint against director

Other Committee · Meeting of April 15, 2026

Somerset Recreation Commission reveals a formal complaint against Director Barry Fontaine. The disclosure came as the board, chaired by Mary Ellen Aspen, moved to formalize Fontaine's annual performance review and worried about conflicting evaluations landing in his personnel file alongside one planned by the town's personnel director, Mark. "I think everyone should know on the board that we did actually get a formal complaint filed on Barry," one member said.

Elsewhere, the board reorganized, re-electing Aspen chair, elevating seven-year member Josh Gallagher to a new post and electing Jeff Cardone to the Community Preservation Committee. Members unanimously approved a student mural project by Somerset Berkeley Regional High School senior Marcus Gomes at the Village School courts, a $10,000 wood-fiber playground upgrade at five sites, and raised safety concerns over helmetless e-bike riders crossing fields and Route 138.
