ZBA Reviews Battery Storage Site's Technical Responses
Zoning Board · Meeting of September 3, 2026
Somerset's Zoning Board of Appeals got an update on a stalled battery storage review, with no vote taken. Flatiron Energy project manager Hannah Larkin said the company has responded to 32 comments third-party reviewer Roux Associates issued August 21 on the proposed 1606 Riverside Avenue battery energy storage system, addressing stormwater, soil contamination and fire-safety concerns. Roux senior engineer Kyle Varela said his firm is still reviewing Flatiron's responses and expects a supplemental memo with proposed conditions once an "environmental investigations memo," due this week, and a soil management plan, due the week of September 14, arrive.
Larkin said in-soil contamination "is regulated by the Massachusetts Contingency Plan," not the zoning board. The board tabled its August 6 minutes and set its next hearing for September 17, asking that fire-engineering consultant Jensen Hughes and Fire Director Chris Groves attend if documentation is ready.
